Coat season has officially hit New York City, and as usual, many people are caught off guard.
As of now I have a couple go-to coats in my closet, but could certainly add a few more to the collection. I mean, you need a mild coat, a get it dirty coat, a coat that’s great with jeans, a coat that’s good for the rain, a coat that you can wear with business attire… and the list could go on.
But, at the moment, I’m obsessing over a particular coat that I’ve never allowed myself to purchase. We will get to that item in a bit, but first, I’ll highlight a number of coats that you might enjoy adding to your arsenal of “needed” coats.

J.Crew has carried the Wedgewood Trench for a while, and it’s a good moderately priced trench. It’s a single breasted option, which is great for guys that don’t normally button their coat.
.

Banana Republic has stepped up its game a bit this year with the Classic Belted Trench (also comes in black). It has traditional trench finishes, is double breasted, and at $225 is another good option.

Another item that you could spent a ton of money on is a peacoat, but it’s not necessary. And “a ton” is obviously subjective. Banana Republic does a good job with the classic peacoat and you can get this one for $250.

One last option from Banana. This camel wool-blend double breasted topcoat looks fantastic. I saw it in the store the other day and it has a great look; perfect for business attire. Not to mention it’s only $250.

Here’s a great peacoat option from Club Monaco. As the quality/style increases, so does the price tag. At $329 the coat is still affordable, but is probably headed towards the pricey side for the average guys peacoat budget.

And now we arrive to “that” item. The one I’ve wanted to buy for the last two years, but haven’t allowed myself to do so. And it’s not so much the exact coat above, but more so just a Burberry trench. The ones I’m interested in range from around $900 – $1,200, but they are worth it. Seriously. You could buy a Burberry trench today, and it’ll still be just as amazing 10-years from now. The single breasted option above is $1,195. I know it’s a lot, but it’s a timeless purchase.

And hey, if you get a Burberry trench maybe you can pose like this guy. Ok, not really. Please don’t pose like this.
But if you are looking for an amazing trench and can afford to go with Burberry, do it. I freaking love them, but just haven’t been able to force myself to take the plunge. Maybe sometime soon.
